What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is one of the most common elective procedures in America. It is an effective method for the long-term removal of unwanted hair on the face and/or body. This treatment typically leaves the skin feeling and looking smoother while providing great, lasting results compared to other methods. Plastic surgeon Dr. Mark W. Stalder at Stalder Plastic Surgery in New Orleans, LA performs effective and safe laser hair removal treatments for both women and men in common areas, like the legs, back, arms, face, armpits, and bikini area.

What Are the Benefits of Laser Hair Removal?

Habitual waxing and/or shaving gets inconvenient. Laser hair removal performed by the staff at Stalder Plastic Surgery in New Orleans, LA gives a wonderful change to the traditional methods of getting rid of unattractive hair. Benefits of laser hair removal include:

  • A quick treatment with minimal discomfort for the majority of people
  • May be carried out on many parts of your body and for different types of hair
  • Makes skin smoother and softer
  • Yields long-term outcomes
  • Acts against hair regrowth between treatments
  • Prevents ingrown hairs
  • Not as repetitive as waxing or plucking

Am I A Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is a safe and effective treatment for most individuals. During your initial laser hair removal consultation at Stalder Plastic Surgery, we will discuss your needs, concerns, and goals so we can determine if you should get this treatment. Ideal candidates for laser hair removal treatments:

  • Want to reduce facial or body hair
  • Want to stop using other hair removal techniques (shaving, waxing, bleaching, depilatory creams)
  • Have dark hair and light skin
  • Are in good overall health

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

On the day of your laser hair removal appointment, you will be asked to relax in one of our treatment rooms as areas of your face and body being treated are washed to eliminate dirt, oil, and creams. During the procedure, a team member will smooth out the skin to create a direct pathway between the laser and the hair follicle root. The laser beam will focus on and destroy the follicle, which stops it from growing back. Usually, you will need a handful of treatments over a month or more to see your ideal results. Your treatments are spaced out to allow the treated areas a chance to heal. This also allows time for follicles in the dormant phase to cycle into the phase of active growth so they can be treated. Our specialized laser technology at Stalder Plastic Surgery targets only the hair follicle to preserve the skin and other tissue in the treated area.

What Should I Expect after Laser Hair Removal?

While laser hair removal is mostly gentle in nature, your skin may feel like it has a light sunburn when lasers are used. When you leave our office, you will be free to resume your daily activities, but you should refrain from heavy activity or sun exposure for at least a day to let the treated areas recover. Applying soothing creams or cold packs can help alleviate any mild discomfort when you get home after your appointment.

Get Rid of Unwanted Body Hair

If you are tired of spending energy, time, and money on bleaching, plucking, shaving, and waxing, schedule an appointment to find out more about laser hair reduction sessions at Stalder Plastic Surgery in New Orleans, LA. Laser hair reduction by plastic surgeon Dr. Mark W. Stalder will help you achieve skin that's smoother by effectively treating unwanted hair on the face and body.

How much does laser hair removal cost?

The cost of laser hair removal can vary based on the size of the treatment area, as well as how many treatment sessions you will need to get optimal results. To give you a better idea of the benefits of laser hair removal, think of the energy and time you are putting into shaving, waxing, or other methods. In comparison, laser hair removal is typically less expensive overall and can save you energy and time in the long run. Dr. Stalder and our team will create a plan for you that includes the number of appointments you need and expected costs.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

One of the main benefits of laser hair removal is that the results it produces are long-lasting. While men and women can enjoy the benefits of the procedure for many years, laser hair removal is technically semi-permanent, since some hair follicles may be unaffected. However, patients find the majority of the hair follicles are dormant after their plan has concluded, and any hairs that do pop up are very easy to manage. More laser hair removal sessions may also be needed to eliminate new growth and any stragglers.

Why do I need multiple laser hair removal sessions?

Follicles grow in cycles. When some follicles are in a live growing phase, others are resting. Because each hair follicle grows in various stages, multiple sessions are recommended to target each hair follicle when it's active. Scheduling your sessions over several weeks is the best way to get the smoothest, most effective results.

Does laser hair removal hurt?

You may experience minor discomfort during your laser hair removal session, but it should not be especially painful. Most patients will feel a slight sting as the laser targets and removes the follicle. We may apply a numbing ointment on your skin prior to your treatment session. Our patients who have experience with waxing often tell us that laser hair removal is far more comfortable.

On August 1, 2023 at the age of 69 I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my right breast. So many things go through your mind at this time and so many choices to make. Within a week I had a team that consisted of an oncologist, radiologist, breast surgeon and plastic surgeon. All amazing doctors, but my plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Stalder, of Stalder Plastic Surgery hit it out the ballpark. My spouse and I went into our first visit with so many questions, we had a list, and each question was patiently answered. During a few consultations with Dr. Stalder I decided that I would do a double mastectomy with DIEP Flap reconstruction. Even though my cancer was only in my right breast I didn’t want the concern of it occurring in my left breast at a later date. Jess, Dr. Stalder’s patient rep had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. She had gone through the same surgery I was about to undergo. I spoke to her at length about my decision and what was to come. Jess was so very so helpful and supportive and really put my mind at ease with my decision. Abby, Dr. Stalder’s PA is the best, such a sweetheart. She was there for every visit from pre-op to all of my follow ups. When she went out on maternity leave, Alexa stepped in, once again another fabulous person. She made me feel as if she had been there from day one as well. I can’t leave Angie out either. On a few occasions when I called with a question and staff was with other patients she always answered my questions or made sure I got my question answered. The surgery I chose consisted of two surgeries, the first the Masectomy and DIEP flap and then a few months later there was the “tweaking” surgery. The second one was to even out my breasts and move the scar from the DIEP flap and tighten up my belly. The first surgery was September 19, 2023 and the second was on February 19, 2024. All through these surgeries Dr. Stalder and his amazing team have been right there along for the ride with me. Always patient and kind when I came in for follow-ups with my list of questions. Dr. Stalder always walks in with the biggest smile and makes you feel so comfortable. And let me tell you how important that is considering you are completely naked during those follow up visits. It’s been almost a year since my first surgery and I can’t thank Dr. Stalder, Jess, Abby, Alexa and Angie enough for their professionalism, kindness, compassion, making me feel like a person, not just a patient, and for giving my spouse piece of mind during this ordeal as well. You guys rock!

Dr. Stalder and his staff are deserving of more than 5 stars. They are truly the best - doctor, physician's assistant , Abby and office staff, Jess. My mastectomy and reconstruction surgeries were very difficult and had many unforeseen complications. Dr. Stalder was so caring and encouraging. He and his staff were never more than a phone call away. They were always patient and kind. The end results are amazing; he has made me feel whole again. I am forever grateful for Dr. Stalder and staff.
