What is Arm Lift Surgery?

One big challenge with losing weight or getting older is the development of excess skin. At Stalder Plastic Surgery in New Orleans, LA, we offer upper arm lift surgery (also known as brachioplasty) as an option for people who cannot seem to tighten and tone their arms with diet and exercise. Excess skin from the elbow to the upper arm is very common, particularly for men and women who are getting older or have lost significant amounts of weight. Arm lift surgery effectively excises this loose, hanging skin, sometimes called "bat wings." Dr. Mark W. Stalder, a plastic surgeon in New Orleans, LA, is very skilled in skin tightening and fat removal procedures. If you would like to learn more about how brachioplasty can alter the appearance of your arms, please contact us for an appointment at Stalder Plastic Surgery.

What Happens During an Arm Lift?

Most likely, your arm lift surgery will be performed in an outpatient facility, except in cases where multiple cosmetic surgeries are being performed simultaneously. An arm lift can be combined with other surgeries (usually performed in an inpatient setting for monitoring), like a mommy makeover, tummy tuck, or thigh lift — if Dr. Stalder decides it is safe. An upper arm lift is usually performed under general anesthesia and may take a few hours to finish. The sagging skin will be surgically excised from the elbow up to the underarm. The incision will be placed to be as concealed as possible, although it will become a visible scar. If liposuction is wanted to eliminate stubborn fatty deposits, this can be performed as well. After the skin is pulled taut, it will be sutured back into place. You must keep the incisions cleaned, covered, and in compression garments.

A typical recovery timeframe may last about two weeks with lots of arm elevation. Please allow your body time to heal. You use your arms for almost everything so patients are encouraged to return to their normal routines slowly. A suture removal appointment will be scheduled approximately ten days after surgery. Compression garments must be kept on until you are released by Dr. Stalder. For at least one month, all exercise and strenuous activity should be eliminated with the exception of short walks. If you notice uncontrolled bleeding, excessive swelling, hematoma (fluid buildup), signs of infection, numbness in the hands or arms, or heavy scarring, please contact Stalder Plastic Surgery for help.

I had a double mastectomy with implants at Ochsner in 2021/2022. Post-surgery, I had chronic pain and my breasts were extremely hard and deformed. I was told for months that “It will get better” or “Give it a few more months”; however, the pain and discomfort never went away and I felt dismissed and unheard from my treatment team at Ochsner. I found Dr. Stalder through an internet search and made an appointment for consultation. Around October of 2022, we first met in his office where I voiced my symptoms and complaints and Dr. Stalder gave me what he thought my diagnosis was: capsular contracture. I thought he was crazy as my own plastic surgeon from Ochsner never once mentioned those words and Stalder had not even examined me. When I left, I searched capsular contracture on the internet and found that all of the photos showing this looked just like my breasts. I quickly booked the surgery with Dr. Stalder. Dr. Stalder performed my explant and flap surgery in January of 2023. I was told that I would likely need someone to stay with me for at least a week post-surgery. However, I was able to return home alone with friends to check on me for any needs. I went back to work in four weeks (six weeks is usually recommended). My second surgery to “smooth everything out and rearrange my nipples” was in June 2023. It was a same-day surgery and I was back to work in six days. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences at Dr. Stalder’s office. From Jessica at the front desk to Abbie (his PA) and most of all Dr. Stalder. He knows what he’s doing and his precision is excellent. He saved me from chronic pain and the thought that my breasts were always going to be deformed after my mastectomy. I would absolutely recommend him over and over again.
