What is a Brow Lift?

A surgical brow lift (sometimes known as a forehead lift or browplasty) is a popular cosmetic treatment that helps create a higher brow appearance, which offers a more youthful look to the upper section of the face. A sagging brow can often create an angry or tired appearance. A browplasty surgically corrects a sagging brow to create a refreshed face by removing excess skin while lifting the eyebrows. Dr. Mark W. Stalder is a plastic surgeon in New Orleans, LA who has completed brow lifts on men and women to give them a more youthful look. Dermal fillers and BOTOX® are often used in combination with a brow lift at Stalder Plastic Surgery for ideal results, producing a softer and smoother appearance.

How Does a Brow Lift Work?

Prior to the procedure, anesthesia will be administered. This may be done through IV sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the nature of the procedure. The incision technique performed during a browplasty is chosen based on the degree of skin sag if the forehead is addressed and the position of the hairline. Some of the many techniques that may be used include:

  • Traditional Incision
Also known as the open browplasty incision, this puts the surgical incision behind the hairline at the top of the head. The open incision not only conceals scars but also allows a certain degree of controlled lifting during the surgery. The open incision works well for those with both frown lines and a sagging brow. This is the better incision for patients who are at risk of having a receding hairline.
  • Trichophytic Incision
This incision is placed right along the patient's hairline. A trichophytic incision permits significant brow lifting for patients with a strong hairline with little risk for recession.
  • Lateral Brow Lift
This technique, also called a temporal brow lift, starts the incision within the hairline just over the temples. A temporal incision permits the outer parts of the brow to be raised and works well for sagging that is present in the outer brow. It also helps to smooth Crow’s feet.
  • Endoscopic Forehead Lift
The endoscopic lift is a more modern method used in browplasty surgery. This method makes several tiny incisions beyond the hairline and inserts the endoscope, which travels down to the area of the eyebrow to release its attached tools. Through the endoscope's camera, the brow tissue is suspended using stitches to lift the brow to a higher position.

The recovery period after brow lift surgery varies with more discomfort and swelling reported with the open technique compared to the endoscopic or temporal methods. In general, patients feel some swelling and bruising in the upper face around the brows and possibly around the eyes. Cold compresses may help to decrease inflammation. Dr. Stalder recommends patients sleep with pillows propped under their head for 3 – 4 nights following their surgery. It is important to avoid any movement or activities that can place stress on the face. The average recovery time from this procedure is about 2 – 3 weeks. The outcome can often be seen immediately, resulting in a rejuvenated appearance that seems more alert and softer and with a visible reduction in sagging skin and fine lines in the upper face.

On August 1, 2023 at the age of 69 I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my right breast. So many things go through your mind at this time and so many choices to make. Within a week I had a team that consisted of an oncologist, radiologist, breast surgeon and plastic surgeon. All amazing doctors, but my plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Stalder, of Stalder Plastic Surgery hit it out the ballpark. My spouse and I went into our first visit with so many questions, we had a list, and each question was patiently answered. During a few consultations with Dr. Stalder I decided that I would do a double mastectomy with DIEP Flap reconstruction. Even though my cancer was only in my right breast I didn’t want the concern of it occurring in my left breast at a later date. Jess, Dr. Stalder’s patient rep had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. She had gone through the same surgery I was about to undergo. I spoke to her at length about my decision and what was to come. Jess was so very so helpful and supportive and really put my mind at ease with my decision. Abby, Dr. Stalder’s PA is the best, such a sweetheart. She was there for every visit from pre-op to all of my follow ups. When she went out on maternity leave, Alexa stepped in, once again another fabulous person. She made me feel as if she had been there from day one as well. I can’t leave Angie out either. On a few occasions when I called with a question and staff was with other patients she always answered my questions or made sure I got my question answered. The surgery I chose consisted of two surgeries, the first the Masectomy and DIEP flap and then a few months later there was the “tweaking” surgery. The second one was to even out my breasts and move the scar from the DIEP flap and tighten up my belly. The first surgery was September 19, 2023 and the second was on February 19, 2024. All through these surgeries Dr. Stalder and his amazing team have been right there along for the ride with me. Always patient and kind when I came in for follow-ups with my list of questions. Dr. Stalder always walks in with the biggest smile and makes you feel so comfortable. And let me tell you how important that is considering you are completely naked during those follow up visits. It’s been almost a year since my first surgery and I can’t thank Dr. Stalder, Jess, Abby, Alexa and Angie enough for their professionalism, kindness, compassion, making me feel like a person, not just a patient, and for giving my spouse piece of mind during this ordeal as well. You guys rock!

Dr. Stalder and his staff are deserving of more than 5 stars. They are truly the best - doctor, physician's assistant , Abby and office staff, Jess. My mastectomy and reconstruction surgeries were very difficult and had many unforeseen complications. Dr. Stalder was so caring and encouraging. He and his staff were never more than a phone call away. They were always patient and kind. The end results are amazing; he has made me feel whole again. I am forever grateful for Dr. Stalder and staff.
