What is IPL?

If you struggle with how your face appears because of dark spots or sun damage, Stalder Plastic Surgery can perform a skin examination at our New Orleans, LA office to see if you'll benefit from intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy. An IPL photofacial is a rejuvenating skin treatment for adult women and men with facial and neck hyperpigmentation issues. IPL may not be invasive, but it can be highly effective and create amazing outcomes. Dr. Mark W. Stalder uses intense wavelengths of light energy that heat the skin to ignite the natural regeneration process and increase collagen production. Over time, you should see a healthier layer with an improved tone and fewer spots.

What Are the Benefits of IPL?

It's not hard to see why IPL photofacials have become the treatment of choice for so many of our New Orleans, LA clients. Here are just a few of the benefits you can enjoy with IPL therapy at Stalder Plastic Surgery:

  • Revitalizes the skin for an enhanced look and feel
  • Neutralizes unwanted pigmentation and dark spots
  • Treatments are quick, simple, and involve little to no pain or recovery
  • Creates a more even, uniform skin tone

Am I a Candidate for IPL?

An IPL photofacial reaches the deeper layers of your skin to improve several complexion problems (particularly brown lesions and sun spots) with little or no recovery time. Ideal candidates for an IPL photofacial at Stalder Plastic Surgery may have many problems with their skin, such as rosacea, sun damage, brown spots (hyperpigmentation), rough texture, visible pores, flushing, freckles, melasma, sun and age spots, or spider veins. Dr. Mark W. Stalder will assess your skin to determine if you are a candidate for a photofacial during your private consultation.

How Does IPL Work?

IPL is performed inside our New Orleans office in about 20 – 30 minutes in our minor procedures room if no other treatments are performed. To prepare for the process, your technician will clean and dry the skin to be treated before protecting your eyes with special shields. The photofacial is administered using a handheld device that passes over the skin while emitting pulses of light energy. While most patients may have mild discomfort throughout the photofacial, it's usually tolerable for the quick treatment length.

IPL treatments do not require a recovery period. Immediately following your appointment, your skin may be red and swollen. This will subside on its own in several hours — it may be masked with makeup if you prefer. Our team recommends you apply a cream on the treated skin to decrease irritation and promote healing. It can also help to use an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine to help reduce swelling. Over the next 2 – 5 days, the blemishes that rested under the skin will rise to the surface and then start to flake away. It's crucial to protect your skin from the sun at all times after an IPL photofacial and to not pick at your skin. While you will have some visible results after your first treatment, your complexion will typically achieve ideal results after several photofacial treatments.

About Us
How much does IPL cost?

Every patient case is unique, so your IPL cost will depend on your unique goals. Stalder Plastic Surgery offers monthly specials, and we take several payment methods. During your initial visit, your technician can estimate your cost and determine the number of treatments needed for optimal results.

How quick are the results from IPL?

Some results can usually be seen following one treatment, but the best results develop about one month after all your treatments. It is normal for your skin to see different responses following each session. You should notice fading of blotchiness, redness, and spots (age, brown, and sun).

What are the possible side effects of IPL?

You may experience mild, temporary side effects, like redness, swelling, blisters, bruising, or crusting. These fade in a few days. Your skin will be extra sensitive to the sun, and you should keep in mind that sun exposure will impact the results of the procedure. We also recommend using sunscreen to protect your skin and prevent problems like redness and spots.

I had a double mastectomy with implants at Ochsner in 2021/2022. Post-surgery, I had chronic pain and my breasts were extremely hard and deformed. I was told for months that “It will get better” or “Give it a few more months”; however, the pain and discomfort never went away and I felt dismissed and unheard from my treatment team at Ochsner. I found Dr. Stalder through an internet search and made an appointment for consultation. Around October of 2022, we first met in his office where I voiced my symptoms and complaints and Dr. Stalder gave me what he thought my diagnosis was: capsular contracture. I thought he was crazy as my own plastic surgeon from Ochsner never once mentioned those words and Stalder had not even examined me. When I left, I searched capsular contracture on the internet and found that all of the photos showing this looked just like my breasts. I quickly booked the surgery with Dr. Stalder. Dr. Stalder performed my explant and flap surgery in January of 2023. I was told that I would likely need someone to stay with me for at least a week post-surgery. However, I was able to return home alone with friends to check on me for any needs. I went back to work in four weeks (six weeks is usually recommended). My second surgery to “smooth everything out and rearrange my nipples” was in June 2023. It was a same-day surgery and I was back to work in six days. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences at Dr. Stalder’s office. From Jessica at the front desk to Abbie (his PA) and most of all Dr. Stalder. He knows what he’s doing and his precision is excellent. He saved me from chronic pain and the thought that my breasts were always going to be deformed after my mastectomy. I would absolutely recommend him over and over again.
