What is a Mommy Makeover?

New Orleans, LA plastic surgeon Dr. Mark W. Stalder regularly works with women who want to regain their pre-pregnancy bodies. While childbirth is an exciting and rewarding moment for a woman, it can change the size and shape of certain body parts and leave one feeling self-conscious. The great news is that getting a slim and toned body is possible, thanks to the assistance of the mommy makeover surgical procedure performed at Stalder Plastic Surgery. The mommy makeover procedure uses a blend of liposuction and skin removal to reshape both the upper body (arms and breasts) and lower body (such as the tummy). Basically, any body part affected by weight gain or breastfeeding can be addressed. Furthermore, nonsurgical remedies can be used to enhance surface imperfections, such as skin problems or stretch marks, from the rapid fluctuation and stretching of the skin during pregnancy.

What Happens During a Mommy Makeover?

The mommy makeover procedure is a body contouring treatment tailored for each woman by Dr. Stalder. Many procedures can be performed together — the most popular treatments are liposuction of the flanks and lower back, as well as breast lift surgery, breast implants, and tummy tuck surgery. The mommy makeover surgeries are performed while the patient is under general anesthesia, lasting 3 – 7 hours depending on the complexity. In addition, a day-long stay at the hospital may be needed. It is common to also incorporate nonsurgical methods, such as an injectable or a laser treatment, to soften facial wrinkles.

After a recovery period in the hospital, you will recover at home with rest and proper aftercare. Recovery from a mommy makeover is generally a slow process. Walking will be hard the first couple of weeks, and a step-by-step home healing protocol will be needed to ensure the incisions heal properly. The majority of women find the healing process can take around six months. Even though the primary recovery could take months, the majority of women can get back to a normal routine within several weeks. Exercise should wait for approximately two months. In the end, the mommy makeover procedure at Stalder Plastic Surgery can be life-changing for women, creating a newfound love for their figure once again.

I had a double mastectomy with implants at Ochsner in 2021/2022. Post-surgery, I had chronic pain and my breasts were extremely hard and deformed. I was told for months that “It will get better” or “Give it a few more months”; however, the pain and discomfort never went away and I felt dismissed and unheard from my treatment team at Ochsner. I found Dr. Stalder through an internet search and made an appointment for consultation. Around October of 2022, we first met in his office where I voiced my symptoms and complaints and Dr. Stalder gave me what he thought my diagnosis was: capsular contracture. I thought he was crazy as my own plastic surgeon from Ochsner never once mentioned those words and Stalder had not even examined me. When I left, I searched capsular contracture on the internet and found that all of the photos showing this looked just like my breasts. I quickly booked the surgery with Dr. Stalder. Dr. Stalder performed my explant and flap surgery in January of 2023. I was told that I would likely need someone to stay with me for at least a week post-surgery. However, I was able to return home alone with friends to check on me for any needs. I went back to work in four weeks (six weeks is usually recommended). My second surgery to “smooth everything out and rearrange my nipples” was in June 2023. It was a same-day surgery and I was back to work in six days. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences at Dr. Stalder’s office. From Jessica at the front desk to Abbie (his PA) and most of all Dr. Stalder. He knows what he’s doing and his precision is excellent. He saved me from chronic pain and the thought that my breasts were always going to be deformed after my mastectomy. I would absolutely recommend him over and over again.
