What Is A Fat Transfer?

When an individual loses weight or ages, they lose overall shape in various body areas where volume once resided. One way to regain the volume that has been lost is through a cosmetic treatment known as fat grafting (a fat transfer). A fat transfer extracts fat from one or more areas of the body and injects it into a specific place that could use additional volume. Fat transfer procedures can be performed on widespread areas, such as the buttocks, or on small features, such as the lower eyelid, cheeks, or lips. Fat transfers are often chosen when an individual hopes to have a natural enhancement rather than using implants or fillers. New Orleans, LA plastic surgeon Dr. Mark W. Stalder uses the most advanced grafting techniques for performing fat transfers. This body contouring treatment at Stalder Plastic Surgery creates natural-looking, appealing outcomes.

What Happens During a Fat Transfer?

You will be placed under some form of anesthesia when undergoing a fat transfer. The exact type of sedation or numbing medication will be based on how much fat is being removed, including the area where it will be placed. Liposuction is performed first via a small, specialized cannula to precisely extract the fat, which will then be harvested and separated inside a centrifuge (which prepares the healthy fat for syringes). After prepping the injection site, the healthy fat tissue will be transferred into the area chosen for the transfer. This injection is completed in layers until the desired outcome has been attained. For larger areas, multiple injections will be needed.

After a fat transfer, you will enter a healing period. Remember, at least two sites on the body are affected by this treatment: the area involving liposuction and the injection sites. The recovery process may last longer if a larger section of the body is addressed. For example, a fat transfer for lip enhancement will generally only need a 1 – 2-day healing period whereas a transfer to a larger section, such as the breasts or buttocks, can take many more days. The sites will appear swollen with some possible bruising, but the outcomes can be seen almost immediately. The added bonus is the area where fat was extracted will appear slimmer. Fat grafting yields great outcomes, but there will be some resorption back to the body. In some patients, an additional transfer may be necessary later on. There is minimal scarring associated with this treatment.

Take the Natural Approach

Moreover, a fat transfer is an outstanding option for the breasts and buttocks. This treatment offers many choices for adding volume and fullness. It can help you achieve the look you wish for without undergoing an invasive surgery that requires a long recovery period. I had a double mastectomy with implants at Ochsner in 2021/2022. Post-surgery, I had chronic pain and my breasts were extremely hard and deformed. I was told for months that “It will get better” or “Give it a few more months”; however, the pain and discomfort never went away and I felt dismissed and unheard from my treatment team at Ochsner. I found Dr. Stalder through an internet search and made an appointment for consultation. Around October of 2022, we first met in his office where I voiced my symptoms and complaints and Dr. Stalder gave me what he thought my diagnosis was: capsular contracture. I thought he was crazy as my own plastic surgeon from Ochsner never once mentioned those words and Stalder had not even examined me. When I left, I searched capsular contracture on the internet and found that all of the photos showing this looked just like my breasts. I quickly booked the surgery with Dr. Stalder. Dr. Stalder performed my explant and flap surgery in January of 2023. I was told that I would likely need someone to stay with me for at least a week post-surgery. However, I was able to return home alone with friends to check on me for any needs. I went back to work in four weeks (six weeks is usually recommended). My second surgery to “smooth everything out and rearrange my nipples” was in June 2023. It was a same-day surgery and I was back to work in six days. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences at Dr. Stalder’s office. From Jessica at the front desk to Abbie (his PA) and most of all Dr. Stalder. He knows what he’s doing and his precision is excellent. He saved me from chronic pain and the thought that my breasts were always going to be deformed after my mastectomy. I would absolutely recommend him over and over again.
